Substrates - Sterilized Rye Grain

Rye grain is ideal as a substrate because of its excellent moisture retention properties, high nutritional content, and ease of handling. It provides a balanced nutritional base for mushroom mycelium to colonize and produce fruiting bodies.

Whole rye grain is typically used for mushroom cultivation.

Our rye grain is cleaned and sorted to remove any debris or foreign matter. While we strive for all foreign material removed durning processing, some things still make it through.

If you find little black foreign seed looking items, that is ergot. As far as the mushrooms go, they will grow just fine with that in there. It is completely sterilized and is not a condition that can transferred after sterilization.

Durning our three day process to prepare the grain for sterilization, any thing 'alive' and able to contaminate your culture is thoughtfully taken care of.

Uses For Sterilized Rye Grain

Sterilized Rye Grain is an ideal substrate to colonize with mycelium. Each rye berry provides much needed surface area for mycelium move through and colonize.

Grain Spawn- Processed and sterilized grain that is fully colonized with live mycelium.

Grain spawn can be used in many ways, including mixing with a bulk substrate for fruiting, creating a master spawn or to use in your garden beds to grow outdoor loving mushrooms.

Master Spawn- A controlled, continually growing mycelium that is kept going by the grower. This process creates a healthy, viable spawn to use repeatedly.

FAQs

Q: I want to fruit in a terrarium/tub. What size tote do I need?

A:We have found that most people use anywhere from a 20-50 quart tote However, this will depend on the measurements of the tote. Are you are breaking the kit up or leaving it as one solid cake? If breaking it up, you need to decide how thick you want your substrate layer to be. 2-3 inches is pretty standard. If you measure the length, width and height of the tote you will find out how may cubic inches it is. Then measure the length and width and depth you want your substrate layer to be. Our 5 LB kits measure 7.5'' high x 6'' wide x 4'' deep which is 180 cubic inches, or 3.17 quarts. From this you can determine what size tote you will need.

Q: Can I use spores to colonize compost?

A:Our compost works best when inoculated with colonized grain spawn. If you just inject this bag with spores you will more than likely not see any growth. Spores need some kind of nutritive substance like grain to take ahold of and establish mycelium growth first. Start by injecting your spores or liquid culture into a sterilized grain medium (we have this for sale in our store), then once the grain is colonized you can transfer it to the compost, then once the compost is colonized the mushrooms will grow right out of the bag or you can transfer them to some kind of fruiting chamber, tote or terrarium.

Q: My substrate is packed tight, do I need to loosen it?

A:Yes, we ship it in that way for two reasons. First, we have less bags burst in shipping when tightly packed and shrink wrapped. Second, having the least amount of air in each bag before we seal then ensures they are able to be stored if necessary. Before using any shipped substrate, allow a day or two for it to reach room temperature and loosen the material in the bags before inoculation. This allows more air flow durning your grow.

Q: How are your bags of grain able to last that long?

A:This is all made possible because of sterilization. The grain is stored in sealed bags with almost all oxygen removed. Therefor they are kept in almost a suspended like state (think of food stored in a food saver bag). They key is the oxygen. Molds and bacterias that break down the grain and cause contaminates need air to live. Without it they will not grow. When you remove the bags of grain from their packaging, unroll them and expose the filter patch, the bag will begin to let in outside air and breath through this filter. This is what allows a desired culture to grow once introduced to the substrate.
