Description

This sale is for 8 of our Rye Grain & Compost grow kits (40 LBS of substrate total)

You are viewing our rye grain & compost all-in-one mushroom growing bag. This kit includes two pounds of rye grain and three pounds of our unique blend of organic sterilized mushroom compost. Made from fully composted and aged manure, peat moss, vermiculite and finally shredded hardwood mulch, packaged in a sealed myco-bag with 0.5-micron filter patch. Simply inject your favorite spores or live culture (not included) through the self healing injection port, incubate and wait. Once the mycelium has colonized the grain mix the bag and the mycelium will colonize the compost. Once the bags is fully colonized you can fruit in the bag or place in a terrarium. Bags are fully sterile, shrink-wrapped and will arrive to your door ready to use.

This kit does not contain any spores or live cultures. We do carry a variety of live culture syringes here on our website. Simply click on the "live liquid cultures" link in our main menu.

Kit Instructions

After receiving your kit, remove the protective shrink wrap and unfold the top flap. Not opening it, just unfolding it so fresh air can flow through the filter patch. It is best to clean the kit and injection site with alcohol and to work in the cleanest environment possible to reduce the risk of contamination.

Inject around 2-4 ccs of spore or liquid culture solution through the self healing injection port. This amount will vary depending on the potency of your syringe. It is important not to inject too much solution as this may cause the kit to become over saturated. After inoculating do not mix the kit. You may need to rotate the kit to allow the solution to spread evenly through the grain portion but mixing is not necessary. Place the kit in a warm dark place to allow it to incubate. Once again incubation temperature will vary depending on the species but is generally around 80-86 degrees.

In about 3-5 days after inoculating your mushroom grow kit, the grain at the bottom of the kit will start to turn white or “colonize”. Wait until all the grain has fully colonized. Once that happens you can mix the entire contents of the kit to disperse the grain throughout the soil. Wait and allow the entire kit (grain and compost) to fully colonize. You will want to fruit the kit once the entire substrate reaches 80% or higher colonization. Ideally you want to wait until it is 100% but sometimes mycelium growth will slow down and your kit may not reach full colonization within an ideal time frame.

Now you can begin to fruit your kit. This can be done right in the bag, in a terrarium, plastic tote or mono tub. You generally will get a larger yield when fruiting in a tub but there are more steps involved and you also run a higher risk of contamination. The easiest way is to let the mushrooms grow right inside the bag.

Fruiting in the bag

If you plan on fruiting the kit in the bag, you will want to open the bag to give the substrate some fresh air once it is fully colonized. Then possibly mist the substrate with clean or distilled water if it appears to be drying out. Then fold the bag shut to hold in moisture. This can be done with some clean tape or a paper clip. Drop the temperature to induce fruiting. This is usually around 70-75 degrees. Open the bag once a day or every other day to give the substrate fresh air.

The three factors that will take the substrate from a vegetative stage to a fruiting stage are temperature, oxygen level and humidity. Controlling all of these at the right time will cause the substrate to fruit. it usually takes about 2 weeks (10-16 days). Once the kit starts to fruit you will see tiny mushrooms or “pins” forming on the substrate. As the pins develop and grow upward you may need to open the bag to make more room for the growing mushrooms. Once the mushrooms are fully grown, harvest them and fold the top of the bag closed. This is to prevent the substrate from drying out. Mist the substrate to rehydrate if necessary. More fruits should continue to grow in the coming weeks.

Volume

These are rough amounts and are the amounts of the substrates in their loosened uncompressed form. Our compost is compressed in blocks for easier shipping but should be uncompressed and aerated before inoculating with grain spawn.

Grain

  • One pound bags are approximately 2.5” high x 4.5” wide x 4” deep 24 FL oz. in volume, equal to 3-4 ½ pint jars
  • Two pound bags are approximately 5” high x 4.5” wide x 4” deep 48 FL oz. in volume, equal to 6-8 ½ pint jars

Compost

  • 10 pounds = 9 quarts
  • 5 pounds = 4.5 quarts

Kits = 7.5’' high x 6'' wide x 4'' deep, which is 180 cubic inches, or 3.17 quarts.

Bag Size
  • Grain (one and two pounds) is bagged in 4x3x18 gusseted myco bags made from 3 mil polypropylene.
  • Compost / bulk substrate (five and ten pounds) is bagged in 10x5x24 gusseted myco bags made from 3 mil polypropylene.
  • Kits are bagged in 5x4x18 gusseted myco bags made from 3 mil polypropylene.

Preparing Your Kit

Our Kits are packaged in a way that keeps them safe durning transit. Although the kit is shrink wrapped, damage can occur. Please inspect all your bags before beginning. Contact us with any issues.

Allow your kits to reach room temperature before inoculating, especially if shipped in extreme cold or heat.

Gently loosening up the substates in the bag after being tightly packaged is recommended to increase the air flow in your substate.

FAQs

Q: I want to fruit in a terrarium/tub. What size tote do I need?

A:We have found that most people use anywhere from a 20-50 quart tote However, this will depend on the measurements of the tote. Are you are breaking the kit up or leaving it as one solid cake? If breaking it up, you need to decide how thick you want your substrate layer to be. 2-3 inches is pretty standard. If you measure the length, width and height of the tote you will find out how may cubic inches it is. Then measure the length and width and depth you want your substrate layer to be. Our 5 LB kits measure 7.5'' high x 6'' wide x 4'' deep which is 180 cubic inches, or 3.17 quarts. From this you can determine what size tote you will need.

Q: Can I use spores to colonize compost?

A:Our compost works best when inoculated with colonized grain spawn. If you just inject this bag with spores you will more than likely not see any growth. Spores need some kind of nutritive substance like grain to take ahold of and establish mycelium growth first. Start by injecting your spores or liquid culture into a sterilized grain medium (we have this for sale in our store), then once the grain is colonized you can transfer it to the compost, then once the compost is colonized the mushrooms will grow right out of the bag or you can transfer them to some kind of fruiting chamber, tote or terrarium.

Q: My substrate is packed tight, do I need to loosen it?

A:Yes, we ship it in that way for two reasons. First, we have less bags burst in shipping when tightly packed and shrink wrapped. Second, having the least amount of air in each bag before we seal then ensures they are able to be stored if necessary. Before using any shipped substrate, allow a day or two for it to reach room temperature and loosen the material in the bags before inoculation. This allows more air flow durning your grow.

Q: How are your bags of grain able to last that long?

A:This is all made possible because of sterilization. The grain is stored in sealed bags with almost all oxygen removed. Therefor they are kept in almost a suspended like state (think of food stored in a food saver bag). They key is the oxygen. Molds and bacterias that break down the grain and cause contaminates need air to live. Without it they will not grow. When you remove the bags of grain from their packaging, unroll them and expose the filter patch, the bag will begin to let in outside air and breath through this filter. This is what allows a desired culture to grow once introduced to the substrate.
